The competition has always been fierce in Japan as most of the leading consumer printer manufacturers reside in Japan. The inkjet market is particularly lucrative because of its adoption by mass consumers as a cheap and reliable way to print rich colored prints for cheap.
Being the market leader in Japan says a lot about who is winning the race on a global scale. Cannon just recently took the lead in the inkjet printer market in Japan. This is the first time since almost three years ago. They ended up passing the Seiko Epson company. Yeah... its a big company that makes watches, printers, and all other sorts of things.
Cannon's share is now almost 41 percent of all printers shipped compared to Seiko Epson's almost 39 percent.
However, the market as a whole is shrinking because printers are being used longer without replacement. We'll have to see what kind of clever tactics they use to try to bring the whole market up again.
